Well things aren’t off to a great start. Turns out the SDK I got was built on top of the original people got back in the day. It includes the original documentation and they’re pretty bad. They don’t really go into detail about any of the libraries you can use and it even has a dedicated section for bugs and faults with the hardware. They shipped the console knowing there were faults.

Wow. So, it ended up being not good, and very faulty.
That sucks  :(

Not worth importing a console just to play one game. I’m going to get a repro cartridge with a rom modified to run on PAL machines.

Yeah, fair point. I wasn't thinking about that
Huh, so you can get like a repro cartridge and modify it with rom hacks and all?
I didn't know you could do that with an N64 cartridge
That's pretty cool!

Yeah, it’s not very well liked, but I enjoy it. I love the jank and some of the arenas.

Ahh. So basically, a 'guilty pleasure' type of thing right?
Basically enjoying something that pretty much everyone hates.
I mean, if you enjoy it, then that all it matters!  ;)
I feel like that's probably the same way with some games like Bubsy 3D
I know Bubsy 3D received like an overwhelming negative reception, though I do recall there being some people that genuinely loves that game

I’ve personally not had that happen to me, though you should get it resurfaced just in case.

Resurfacing is when you put the disc through a machine that carefully sands off the data side of the disc until the scratches are no longer there. I’ve had discs resurfaced before and they end up working much better afterwards! ;D

Huh. I haven't thought about doing that
That would be a good idea, that would actually might be worth trying
Of course, these cds are just old copies of the "Now that's what I call music" compilation cds, so I could probably find a better copy off them of eBay if I wanted to
Some of these, we've had for years, and don't exactly remember where they came from
Fortunately, not all of them are in that bad of condition and works fine, though some of them however, are in very poor condition

One of these old cds has nothing but scratches on it. Like, literally the entire back of it just has scratches on it. Surprisingly, this one still works, though track 19 (coldplays "Fix You") is where it gives up completely

Again, as stated, getting these resurfaced would possibly fix them up
Either that, or the other best solution is just finding a different copy online

Glad this was mentioned, because the more I think about it, the more I realize resurfacing would possibly be the best option for like rare games that's expensive online
And that's probably what I could do if my Japanese copy of Door to Phantomile, or my copy of Lunatea's Veil were to get really scratched up  :)

And as of interesting things, nothing too noteworthy has happened as of now, though I'm very certain some more noteworthy things will happen this month.

I got my Pippin (halfway) repaired. I ordered a replacement CD drive and swapped it in. Works great though it’s a little louder than the old one.
It also turns out the driver I got wasn’t exactly specified as working with the console, but it worked perfectly!

Just need to find a way to fix the buttons on the top (right now I need to manually bridge connector pins to turn it on and off) then I’ll finally have a fully working unit.

Wow. So, it ended up being not good, and very faulty.
That sucks  :(

I’m sure someone has figured out how to work it, so will need to ask around

I don’t like using that term, because I don’t feel guilty about enjoying it. I just enjoy it.

Ahh, okay.
Hopefully it works out, in the end

Understandable  :smile2:

Jesus! What did you do with it?! Use it as a puck in hockey?!

I don't know how it got scratched up that badly  :embarassed:
It's been like that for well, a long time
In that case scenario, I'd probably be better off buying a new copy

The 'interesting' thing I did today was having Pizza. Yeah.

I don't have very interesting stuff to discuss at the moment sadly, so in the meantime, have some Cat photos  ;)

Ahh, so basically if you go in and do some coding, you can get HD-DVD to work on an normal dvd player.
Interesting.
If I was to get an HD-DVD disc, I would probably get Shrek the Third on HD-DVD, and uhm, whatever else was released on HD-DVD, not sure all of what movies and such was released on HD-DVD

HD-VMD is a different format the HD-DVD. It's like dual layer DVDs but with much more layers. It flopped because producing discs with that many layers are difficult.

Also the real winner of the HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray format is Sony. They made a Blu-Ray player cheaper than every other Blu-Ray player on the market and tacked a great gaming console to it, it's called PS3.

So HD-VMD and HD-DVD aren't the same thing. Gotcha
Ahh, the Ps3. What a great console it is.  :)
Mhm, I knew the main PlayStation consoles (2, 3, 4, etc.) could play DVDs, with the 3rd one, and onward supporting Blu-rays.
.Well except the first PlayStation. A little doubtful that one plays DVDs

Aww these kittens are CUTE.

Thanks!

Their names are Vader, and Grumpy.
I should probably make a cat thread one of these days

No, it can only play Audio CDs. The PS2 was the first ever home console to play DVDs. (Unless you count the Nuon, but that was more like a console in DVD players.)

Give them hugs for me. ;)

Interesting
The Ps2 to me still holds up very well to this day tbh, plenty of good games on that console
What's the Nuon?

Give them hugs for me. ;)

I gave them pets  :)

Because I felt like it, anotha Cat photo

Well I did something today (May 15): Went to a Doctor appointment (with my mom), stopped by a store and got a small thing of Sweet tea and chicken sandwich, listened to the radio, yeah I had a good time  ;)

What's the Nuon?
A console made to compete with the Dreamcast and PS2, released around the same time. The gimmick was that it wasn't a standalone unit you bought, but rather it was built into certain DVD players.
The story goes Sony was scared of this taking over the gaming landscape due to the increase adoption of DVD as a movie format, so to compete, they added a DVD player to the PS2 (Something they were reluctant to do at first because Sony were worried it'd take away from DVD player sales), and I guess the rest is history.

The PS3 was a somewhat similar story, only it was done to give Blu-Ray the advantage against the other formats, rather than their concerns on the gaming side. However this resulted in the PS3 costing way more than originally planned, so they gave Microsoft an easy victory over them at first. That was until Sony made it cheaper and gave it exclusives that were worth a damn.

So, a DVD player that also played games..
And I'm guessing the Nuon was a failure cause it says only eight games were officially released for it and only four DVDs utilized the Nuon's technology.
Which, yeah, that is a very low amount

To be honest, it was quite a smart move to add a DVD player to the Ps2.
(Also speaking of the Dreamcast, I still want to own a Dreamcast to this day)

The Ps3 exclusive games, for the most part, was good! (LittleBigPlanet was one of them)
And if anything, I'd say the Ps3 counts as a good Blu-ray player

This also reminds me.. I think the Ps2 could also be used as a Linux computer?
Cause I remember there was official releases where you could install Linux on the Ps2
