Funnily enough, I was about to make a MUGEN Klonoa thread.

I would love to help contribute what I can. What exactly do you need?
Right now we need to recruit a code nerd and/or someone experienced with Mugen building. Already got art since I'll be doing it and I'll be testing the mechanics as well when characters are being worked on. I'm also going to get music in and probably a couple of stages for now too.

Why not use open source Godot http://www.godotengine.org/wp/ Its designed to be like Unity aka reduce the amount of programming
What tools are you going to use to create the assets?
I would also recommend asking Bandai Namco for permission http://www.bandainamcogames.eu/contact-us
I may get that program if it supports Mugen. And do I need to ask them permission if the game's free? I'm not planning to make money off of this at all. Unless they're over-reactive like Hasbro then I can't see why I'd need to ask.
Its a free and open source game engine much better than Mugen. The advantage of using it would that your game can be open source which makes things like fixing bugs and adding features much easier. Also I don't think Mugen supports linux.

You don't want what happened to Fighting is Magic http://www.giantbomb.com/forums/general-discussion-30/mlp-fighting-is-magic-team-receive-a-cd-from-hasbr-578108/

Explain how is it better than MUGEN. Because it's just open source?

Nonetheless if I were you @LazerSunfish I would definitely would get in touch with Bandai Namco and look up their fair use clauses as well.

Its designed to be just like Unity. So its pretty easy to make games in it. Also you can make HTML5 games in Godot.

Also this might help https://archive.org/details/klonoaturnaround

Is it portable? As in you can port these games easily to consoles and handhelds like Unity3D?

Though I'm getting slightly off topic here, unless Lazer states otherwise, that she has to use the software she mentioned. Other things to mention is that it's a small game and not a huge project, so I'm sure that starting off she would like to use something existing rather than starting from scratch (ergo why she wanted it based off Mugen).

It has a one click deploy feature so It can easily port games to PC,MAC,Linux,Android,BlackBerry and HTML5.
I would recommend making the game in HTML5 and port it to Firefox OS that way it will run in everything that supports HTML5 kinda like this game https://marketplace.firefox.com/app/amor-de-panda?src=search

I'm still confused about the problem of the language, do you have it on English now or are you still using it on Portuguese? If you could give me one screenshot of your program it would make things clear to me.

I know that we do have a member from Brazil here in the forums but he is not very active here, I don't know if he would want to help you a little.

I'll use this program if Mugen becomes too problematic, then. But to prevent legal issues I am absolutely not putting up on any market place, this is why I wanted Mugen at first.

Nah man it's chill now~ I've got an English version which was what Fighter Factory 3 is. Thank you for the help you've done though.

Gonna clear up some stuff here:
  • The game will not be brought up on any market place at all and will only be desktop-based. Even if I get permission from NB to make this, putting it up somewhere like that will host a lot of problems. If somebody else tries to paste it on the market I will have to talk to them about it.
  • This game will be free no matter what. This is only for entertainment, not profit.
  • The game will still be short unless it's coming out fantastic to the fans and that everyone on the team (if there is one) still wants to work on it. I'm not going to put others through free labor on something huge if there's no feedback or it came out meh after a lot of time being put on it.
